The most challenging was designing a power source for the Samsung Gear VR as the hardware can hold a charge for several hours, but for a full day event, we would need to keep the unit fully charged. The hardware was designed around the feature requirements. Needed to freely move in 36oº with the ability to look up and down.Needed to be easily cleaned and maintained.Standalone – meaning a user could walk up and it would work without a brand ambassador.The viewer needed to accomplish several things – ![]() We could have used any headset, but the Samsung Gear VR worked out best because the content we created was a series of 360º videos. We decided to test out and designed our own viewer using a Samsung Gear VR headset. Since VR allows a person to look in all directions (full 360º view) it is only natural to consider attaching a headset to a mount that allows you to look in all directions, without the need of a brand ambassador. They are usually unmanned, so the cost of maintaining one is fairly cheap and easy once it is installed. Traditional viewers allow people to look through them and see objects in the distance magnified. You typically see them at tourist destinations around the world. Tower viewers or standalone viewers are often found at high traffic areas, events of interest or scenic outlooks.
